I am directed by the Secretary of State for the Colonies to
inform you that on the report of the medical adviser of
the Crown Agents, you have been considered physically fit for
appointment as Assistant Engineer and
Station Officer in the Hongkong Fire Brigade with salary at the rate of £216 rising after three
years to £240, subject to a deduction of
4 per cent as contribution to the Widows & Orphans Pension Fund of the Colony. Free quarters, uniform, fuel and light will be provided. A paper of particulars relating to leave
and other conditions of service on your being appointed, and requiring you to give security to the satisfaction of the Governor in respect of the pecuniary responsibility attaching to your office, is Enclosed.
2. You are to understand that your employment will be under the Colonial Government; that your emoluments will be paid solely from the funds of the Colony; and that the appointment will be subject to the Colonial Regulations in force for the time being, which are published in the annual "Colonial Office List,” and can also be consulted in this office.
3. The Regulations (Nos. 81 to 96) specify the proceedings which are taken in a Colony when it is deemed necessary to suspend an officer with a view to his removal from the service; but you must also understand
that you will hold the appointment subject to the pleasure of the Crown, and that the pleasure of the Crown that you should no longer hold it may be signified through the Secretary of State, in which case no special formalities are required.
